"The Book is a new hope for the Malankara Orthodox Church” . The book contains a great Vision for the Orthodox Church" – Rev Fr T J Joshua
‘Orthodox Church of the East in the Twenty First Century: Challenges and Opportunities’
Orthodoxy Beyond Limits Forum created history by releasing the first Church Management/Administration book titled ‘Orthodox Church of the East in the Twenty First Century: Challenges and Opportunities’. This might be the first management study guide/ reference book written in the two thousand years of history of the Malankara Orthodox Church.
The releasing ceremony was held on 27/10/08, at the YWCA hall, Mavelikara, Alleppey District, Kerala, South India. His Grace Thomas Mar Atansious Metropolitan of Chengannur presided over the function. Rev Fr T J Joshua gave the Key note address. Mr Thomas Kuruvilla introduced the book. Felicitations were made byFr Mathai Vilanilam , Adv K K Thomas and Fr Alexander Vattakatu . Mr Jacob Mathew delivered vote of thanks.
Around Two Fity Members Attended the Function.
H G Thomas Mar Athansious Metropolitan
His Grace began the speech by congratulating the author on bringing up the Fraud Claims of Reethu issue. His Grace stressed on the need for protecting the Catholicate of the all East. He also pointed out the need for revamping the media policy and the need for human resource training.
Fr T J Joshua
Fr T J Joshua asked the question "Why you are an Orthodox Christian?" He said that the book clearly briefly mentions the answer for the same.
He also added that the author has not given a blind criticism but had provided a great hope for the Orthodox Church.
The book must be seriously considered as a study material and reference guide by the Church leadership and all those relevant and practical suggestions must be implemented.
"Mr George Alexander has written the book not for achieving any position in the Church and also for not any financial gains, but it has come out of the true love for the Church"
A Part from the Foreword written by Fr T J Joshua
“Here a is book which demands the attention and serious consideration of all the members of the Orthodox Church and more especially of those who hold position and responsibility in the Church. These are not random thoughts of a carefree mind but reflections and proposals of a person who sincerely and seriously think about the Orthodox Church, about its policies, programmes and prospects. The author is in touch with the developments and trends in the Orthodox tradition through website and other media.”
Shri Paul Manalil
“If this book was written fifty years back the very face of the Malankara Orthodox Church should have been a different one. The Church should have reaped many benefits out of it.”
George Alexander (Author)
The author stressed on the fraud claims of the Malankara Catholic Rite. He said that the Orthodox Church must be able to deal with the fraud claims of the Reethu only then we will be able to feel proud.
He also criticized MGOCSM for giving more importance on building flats and deviating away from the basic objective. He questioned the connection between the basic motto of MGOCSM ie Study, Service and Worship and its connection with constructing flats. He also added that construction of flats must be given secondary importance. If MGOCSM had invested the money and interest in preparing the new Orthodox Study Bible rather than in flats, they would have published the Bible earlier.
If MGOCSM did not act accordingly the Orthodox Church will soon become the 'Church of Old Age'
Author also questioned the genuine nature and commitment of Indian Christian Orthodox Network (ICON) for censoring the author with regard to the Malankara Catholic Rite Issue.
George Also added that book will create miracle for the Orthodox Church if only the Church leadership positively respond to the book. The ultimate aim of the book will be not providing benefits to Orthodox Christians alone, but activities of the Church must provide benefits to all sections of the society regardless of caste, age sex and denomination. George also thanked each and everyone who has toiled behind the book.

Pope Shenouda: 12 Million Christians in Egypt, but These Are the Church’s Own Figures
0 Comments Published by georgy on at 11:28 AM.
The Orthodox Pope Shenouda III told the satellite TV channel OTV yesterday that Christians in Egypt are 12 millions. However, he added the Church had come up with these figures based on a special list which is like a Church’s internal census of every Christian family.“We can find out Christians’ number by ourselves and do not care about official figures” he added. He affirmed that the Abu Fana monastery crisis had been linked to special conditions and that it could only be solved by resorting to informal councils, ascribing this to Kasr Hur Bedouins’ habits. He stresses his commitment to the Gospels’ teachings with regard to divorce even if they ran counter to the Personal Status Law.
“The Church does not criticize the judiciary’s rulings” he said. “The judiciary, though, has no authority over the Church’s conscience”.
“Who wins a divorce in court and wants to get married one more time had better go to another Church” he said. “We’re not the only church around, are we?”
He denied asking clergymen to make her appear on TV to reject rumors about her killing and detention. He demanded one more time a special cadre for Churches’ workers nationwide to keep abreast with skyrocketing prices.
H H Pope Shenouda Receives State VIPs and the US Ambassador

The chairman of the Church’s media committee, Bishop Mark, denied rumors that the US ambassador talked to the Pope about some sectarian incidents which happened during his absence and about the imprisonment of a priest for five years on charges of forgery.
Bishop Mark stressed the visits only aimed to welcome the Pope back.
“Even the Holy Synod has not decided yet when it will hold its next session, as we are now focusing on the Pope’s health and celebrating his return” he said.
The Vice-Chairman of the Milli [Confessional] General Committee Tharwat Bassili confirmed the bishop’s words saying: “The Pope and the delegation just had some good time.”
His Beatitude Volodymyr greeted the representatives of Ukrainian Association of the Blind in the Khmelnytskyi area on the 75th Anniversary
0 Comments Published by georgy on at 11:19 AM.KHMELNYTSKYI REGIONAL ORGANIZATION OF THE UKRAINIAN ASSOCIATION OF THE BLINDon the 75th anniversary Ladies and Gentlemen!I heartily congratulate you on the world's White Cane's Day and on the prominent event - the 75th anniversary of foundation of the All Ukrainian Public Fellowship of the Association of the Blind.Every feast, and a jubilee in particular, as an outstanding event makes think over the actual correspondence of our possibilities and the real deeds. Analysing that it turns out that we are gifted with many talents from God and are capable of being useful for the people needing help and care. The Holy Scripture teaches us to be sensitive to the people's grief and to make the neighbours' sufferings easier with our participation. That is how the law of Christ is fulfilled. Throughout its years-long history the All-Ukrainian Fellowship of the Blind proved that it walks the way of fulfillment of the god's law and its major commandment - "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind... And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (Matthew 22; 37-39). And the one doing a good deed for his neighbour, as Jesus Christ teaches us, he does it for the God himself. "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." (Matthew 25; 40). During these 75 years the All-Ukrainian Fellowship of the Blind has done lots of good deeds. With its assistance tens of people with visual problem have been able to receive full-valued education, job and medical care; they better cope with the difficulties with transportation and self-service. For many the Fellowship became the life support, uniting the kind-hearted people, who are not indifferent to the problems and pains of a neighbour. Due to the activity of your public association, our blind compatriots feel themselves protected and necessary to our society. On this solemn day I give you and your associates in the matter of socialization of visually disabled people my heartily wishes of the God's blessing, "opening the eyes of the blind" (Psalms 145; 8), and giving strength to walk a hard way of your choice - the way of serving the neighbour. Let your slogan in your future deeds will be a call of the Saviour: "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." (matthew 5; 16).May the blessing of Our Lord Jesus Christ rest on all of you.† Volodymyr,Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine,Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

My Honourable Boris Evhenovych! The Executive Committee for Restoration of the Church of St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia and for the Restoration of the Common Grave Memorial Cemetery in Zvirynets addressed to the hierarchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. By the joint effort we started the good matter of the restoration of the church, founded in 1916 in the territory of the military cemetery, where the deceased in the World War I had been buried. The main altar was dedicated to the Holy Hierarch Nicholas, and the Church of the Holy Hierarch Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow was planned to be arranged in the ground floor. .In the Soviet times the church was turned into the laboratory block of the Institute of Strength Problems of the NASU, and the tombs of the Common Grave Military Cemetery were destroyed. The building of the church remained, but unfortunately today the Church is not allowed to perform liturgical services there. In 2006 the action group for restoration of St. Nicholas Church and the Common Grave Military Cemetery in Zvirynets was organized. During this time the complex work on gathering of the historical information and the documents about the church, the web site of the project was made and registered, the Passport of the church and the accounting records of the church that enabled entering St. Nicholas Church in the State Register of the Fixed Monuments as a monument of architecture of local significance. This project is supported by the city authorities, representatives of culture, business circles, public organisations and is under the auspices of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. In connection with the necessity of preservation of this church, not only as an object of cultural heritage, but as an orthodox shrine, we ask You, Boris Evhenovych to render support and approve respective decisions as for vacation of the building for its further use by the Orthodox Church for the liturgical purposes, and to allot a land plot in the territory of the church to create the Memorial of the Military Common Grave, destroyed in the period of the Soviet regime. It was stated by teacher of the Kyiv Theological Academy, official of the Department for External Church Relations of the UOC archpriest Mykolai Danylevych at the conference "Ukrainian National Studies of the 21st century: new approaches, criteria, and development objectives", which took place in Kyiv on October 21-22. He took part in it with the blessing of His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is in want of such work. In spite of the fact that the major part of our parishes performs the liturgical services in Church Slavonic, there are the parishes in the fold of the UOC, mostly in West Ukrainian regions, where the services are performed in Ukrainian. "According to Metropolitan of Lutsk and Volyn Niphont, there are some 80 such parishes in the Volyn region, which coincides with two our church dioceses. They are also in the dioceses of Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Rivne", comments Fr. Mykolai. The Message of His Beatitude Daniel on the Occasion of the Feast of Righteous Demetrios the New, Protector or Bucharest

Beloved pilgrims,
On the occasion of the celebration of 2000 years since the birth of Holy Apostle Paul, the Church’s greatest missionary and the author of most of the Biblical writings used in the Orthodox service, the holy relics of St Paul, the Apostle to the Nations, are being brought to Bucharest from Greece for a week (October 23-29, 2008), thanks to the benevolence of Most Rev. Panteleimon, Metropolitan of Veria, Nausa and Kampania.
The presence in Bucharest, over these feast days, of the holy relics of St Paul, together with those of Righteous Demetrios the New, the Protector of Bucharest, is a great blessing to us all: hierarchs, clergy, monastics, faithful pilgrims from Romania and abroad.
Holy Apostle Paul is, after our Savior Jesus Christ, the greatest teacher of the Gospel of God’s love for humans. The life of the Holy Apostle and Martyr shows how God’s grace worked in this man who became, from tormentor of the Church, its zealous shepherd and showed how very alive is the connection between Christ and His Church.
Worthy shepherd and enlightened theologian of Christ’s Church, who went through many tribulations and trials before his martyr death, Holy Apostle Paul teaches us, through word and deed, to love Christ and His Church, to be witnesses to the grace and love of the Holy Trinity, working within the Church, to honor God’s saints and to live the Christian life in holiness, as a preparation for the Resurrection and eternal life in the Kingdom of God. All the epistles or letters of Holy Apostle Paul show us how Christ’s Gospel must be lived practically: as repentance for sins, as joy of forgiveness and of our reconciliation with God and with each other, as a life of prayer, holiness, brotherly love and good deeds.
Holy Apostle Paul is the teacher of Christian family, which he calls a Mystery, being an icon of light of the love of Groom Christ towards His Bride – the Church, as he teaches us in the Epistle read during the Service of the Holy Matrimony (Ephesians 5:20-32). At the same time, Holy Apostle Paul is a teacher of evangelical advices and of monastic life as a spiritual struggle for the shedding of passions and gaining of holiness, as he highlights in the same Epistle to the Ephesians (6:10-18).
Holy Apostle Paul is, at the same time, a teacher of Christian life in the midst of society, persuading Christians to live a pure and balanced life, to cooperate with state authorities for the common good of the society (Romans 13:1-8), to help the poor and the widows, to respect parents and the elderly, to raise children and youths in faith and holiness, to help needy church communities in a brotherly way.
Holy Apostle Paul teaches us, as well, to see the sky and earth as the work and gift of God for us humans (Romans 1:20), offering thus light for the dialog between faith and science, but also to contribute to the sanctification and protection of creation, of the environment.
In a special way, Holy Apostle Paul presents the earthly Christian time, in history, as a journey towards the heavenly homeland (Hebrews 11:13-16; 13:14).
In this light of Christian life as pilgrimage or seeking of holiness or of heavenly grace, St Paul is enriching, these days, the joy of all pilgrims who are venerating his holy relics together with those of Righteous Demetrios the New and of Holy Emperors Constantine and Helen, protectors of the Patriarchal Cathedral of Bucharest. This church is being reconsecrated now, 350 years since its construction (1658 – 2008), but also 320 since the printing of the first complete translation of the Holy Scripture in Romanian (the Bible of Bucharest: 1688) and on the celebration of 500 years since the printing of the first Orthodox Euchologion in the world (the Euchologion of Macarie, 1508).
Beloved pilgrims,
In these days of blessing and joy, which Christ our Lord is giving us through His saints, we congratulate you all for coming to Bucharest and we are praying to the Allmerciful God to reward your faith and effort, your yearning and charity, with His grace and gifts, with health and redemption, peace and joy, help in your family and activity, with many and blessed years, to grow richer in faith and brotherly love, in holiness and good deeds, for the glory of the Most Holy Trinity, for the joy of the saints and for redemption.

LIVING IN COMMUNITY: THE GOAL OF CHRISTIAN-MUSLIM DIALOGUE
0 Comments Published by georgy on Tuesday, October 28 at 11:40 PM.
"The prevailing misperceptions, ambiguities, polarizations, tensions and collision (of values between Muslims and Christians), hijacked and sharpened by politico-ideological agendas and geo-political strategies, can be transformed only through a shared life in community," stated His Holiness Aram I, head of the Armenian Apostolic Church (See of Cilicia), in delivering the key-note speech of the consultation.
For His Holiness Aram I, such a "community building must take place on the basis of equal rights and obligations, as well as full and active participation in all aspects of society life, including decision-making". It "presupposes a quality of integration that provides equal opportunities, ensures diversity and enhances mutual acceptance".
Among the "divisive issues" to be addressed, His Holiness Aram I listed how both religions deal with the relationship between faith and reason, the response to secularism, the concept of mission and the tension between human rights and Islamic law.
Having a "rich history" of Christian-Muslim dialogue, the ecumenical movement needs to keep pursuing it with a "more focused" agenda, "touching on issues that pertain to the life of the people," said His Holiness Aram I.
Organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC), together with a number of Christian world communions, the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) and the Roman Catholic Church, the consultation has gathered some 50 church leaders and experts on Christian-Muslim dialogue in Chavannes-de-Bogis, outside

The next day, for the first time since the signing of the Act of Canonical Communion in May of last year, with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion, Bishop Merkury of Zaraisk officiated at Liturgy at the Synodal Cathedral.
A prayerful mood was created by the wonderful singing of the youth, most of whom have been singing in the kliros for some years. The choir was directed by Peter A Fekula.
At the end of Divine Liturgy, Vladyka Merkury delivered a sermon, reminding the faithful of the purpose and aim of the holy life is. He noted that “Fr John’s entire life was devoted to one goal—to serve the Word of God, and the Word of God is the Gospel, which is the ‘good news’ of the
In conclusion, Vladyka called upon the participants of the symposium and the parishioners gathered for Divine Liturgy to keep from letting the flame within us extinguish, which warms us ever since the Mystery of our Baptism occurred, not to lose focus, but to piously stoke love for God in our hearts, and prepare ourselves to meet God.
Vladyka Merkury’s sermon was heartfelt, for the Pastor of Kronstadt was one of the saints through whom the Savior brought the future bishop to Orthodox Christianity.
Vladyka recounted how once he saw in the icon corner of his grandmother—at one time the only believing member of his family—a portrait of a priest in a cassock and wearing medals right next to the icons. This was in the 1970’s, when Fr John had not yet been glorified in
His wise grandmother replied that the portrait should remain where it was, and gave him a book titled Two Days in Kronstadt. When the future bishop read the worn volume, the image of this pastor took form in his mind: how zealously he performed divine services, with what trepidation he stood at the Altar of God, the way he intoned the priestly exclamations. This was not simply the utterance of words: one felt the meaning of each word, one sensed the priest’s own profound experiencing of them. And the young man then understood who Fr John of Kronstadt really was.
Later, he went to

Vladyka Merkury pointed out that “Fr John’s entire life was bound to the life of the Fatherland. He did not set out to be an All-Russian beacon of light, but was always obedient to his Fatherland and Church. Most dear to Fr John were our Lord Jesus Christ and the Father and the Holy Spirit, and the most cherished after that was the soul of man, which was his foremost focus of care and support.” His Grace expressed the hope that everyone, whether they serve as pastors of the Church or serve God and man as a layperson, would have
After divine services, Protopriest Andrei Sommer read an epistle of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion addressed to the participants of the symposium. Fr Andrei gave Bishop Merkury an icon of St John in memory of the occasion, saying that the members of the gathering are mostly now the third generation of Russians, who try to preserve the language, culture and faith of their ancestors far from the borders of their historic Homeland, and they live in the Russian spirit. And whoever they are to become in life—pastors, diplomats, businessmen, some would spiritually nurture Orthodox Christians outside of Russia, others would serve the Fatherland and people in their lay lives, preserving and strengthening the bonds between Russia and Russians abroad.

"Goths often come to our Thomas discussion club. They are very interested in the theme of death, life after death. They admire traditional black cloths of clerics and monks. According to Fr. Oleg, when talking to representatives of any youth subculture, it is necessary to find common grounds, common interests that can bridge them to Orthodoxy. Moscow, October 17, Interfax - Former adherent of not traditional for Russia Islamic trend - Wahhabism - decided to adopt Orthodoxy after a series of conversations with an Orthodox priest.
"This man came to our church to talk about interaction between Islam and Christianity. He asked why Christianity committed such "a ridiculous logical mistake" as a dogma of the Trinity. At the same time, he didn't understand the Islamic teaching on predestination. To clear up these questions he started attending our catechetical meetings," Rector of St. Thomas Church in Kantemirovskaya Fr. Daniel Sysoyev told Interfax-Religion on Friday.
The young man found the answers to his religious questions and then decided to take baptism. Fr. Daniel found that he was firm in his decision and baptized him. The newly converted Christian conceals his name as he is afraid that his former Wahabi co-religionists will punish him.

New Saints for the Syrain Orthodox Church
0 Comments Published by georgy on Saturday, October 25 at 10:41 PM.The revered Church fathers, MOR BASELIOS SHAKRALLA (Maphryono of the East, d. 1764), entombed at Kandanad St. Mary’s Church and MOR KOORILOS YUYAKKIM (Reesh Episcopo to Malankara, d. 1874), entombed at Mulanthuruthy MarThoman Church, were Canonized by the Supreme head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church, H.H. Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, at two different ceremonies held at Kandanad and Mulanthurthy church on 21st October 2008 and 20th October 2008 respectively. Thousands of faithful were present on both the places when the Synod Secretary read the concerned Patriarchal bulls in the presence of the H.H. Patriarch, H.B. Catholicos, the Metropolitans and priests.
As per the Patriarchal decree the names of these church fathers will henceforth be remembered in the 5th TUBDEN (Diptych). The canonization of these Church fathers has been hailed as a defining moment for the Syrian Christian community of Kerala. A brief biography of the Church fathers canonized are given below.
St. Baselios Shakralla, Maphryono of the East (d. 1764)
Maphryono St. Baselios Shakralla (Shukr Allah) is one of those illustrious Syrian fathers who came down to guide the church in Malankara during an acutely turbulent time and died here. It is more than 250 years since the Holy Father attained his eternal rest. Yet his memory is etched in golden letters in the history of Malankara Church.
The Maphryono (Maphrian) was born in the city of Aleppo in Syria as the son of Deacon Musa al-Qasabji. Under the Malfono of the local church, he studied Syriac, becoming proficient in it and also in Arabic. After completing the studies in religious sciences, he become a monk and later was ordained a priest. He was of commendable deeds and character. His knowledge was extensive. A book on the catechism written by him in Arabic is kept in the Church at Aleppo. In 1748, he was consecrated a Maphryono (Catholicos) for the church in Malabar under the name Baselios by the Patriarch of Antioch and all the East Moran Mor Ignatius Geevarghese III. The book Mor Baselios wrote about his journey to Malabar and the subsequent events, in Syriac, gives an insight into the happenings of the time. His primary mission in Malabar was to validate the consecration of Mor Thoma V as the Metropolitan of Malankara Syrian Christian Church and to overcome the confusion then prevailing here. Like many of his predecessors and successors who came to India, he too had to suffer a lot, but his upright and sincere efforts helped a great in bringing the faithful together once again. After serving the Malankara Syriac Christian Church for 13 years, His Beatitude died in AD 1764 at Mattancherry in Cochin and his mortal remains were entombed at the Marth Mariam Jacobite Syrian Church, Kandanad on 22nd October.
The feast day of this father is celebrated by the entire Syriac Christian community with great enthusiasm and thousands visit the church to pray at the tomb during this time, a practise that is continuing for many centuries now. In fact the main festival of the ancient Kandanad Church is the dukrono of this Holy Father who died 244 years ago.
St. Koorilose Yuyakkim (d. 1874)
Born in the Hbab village of Turkey in February 1810, Mor Koorilose was ordained a Deacon on August 6, 1839 and was tonsured a monk soon after. The then Patriarch of Antioch Moran Mor Elias II appointed him as the secretary to His Holiness, a position in which he continued till his ordination as Metropolitan at the ancient Deyrul-Saffron Monastery (Kurkumo dayro) on 18 February 1845. The very next year he was deputed to India by His Holiness to investigate the allegations against a bishop who was alleged to be got ordained by producing false information. In august 1846, he reached Malabar. When Mor Koorilose initiated stern actions against divisive forces, the British rulers of India who under influence from the European missionaries, caused serious hardships for him. In 1848 he was deported from the states of British Travancore and Cochin under the influence of these protestant missionaries who feared that even the presence of the Metropolitan would be a great obstacle in attaining their evil goals. However since he was armed with the power of God, no forces could ban him for long; after a few years of exile he was back. His life in India was always of tension and struggles. In 1865 he got a sincere companion in Mor Dionysius Joseph Pulikottil, who was ordained by the then Patriarch, in his struggle against the influential European missionaries. After hard struggles with sincere services for our Syrian Orthodox Church in India in different ways, spiritual and cultural, the Metropolitan passed away from this world on Tuesday 20th of Chingam (September 2), 1874 and was entombed at the specially erected tomb in the Mulanthuruthy Mar Thoman Church compound.
Mor Koorilose Yuyakkim was a highly educated person in Theology and Holy Bible studies, and an excellent speaker as well as a master in Syriac music and calligraphy. He left for us many letters and poems in Syriac. In fact he was the first to help in publishing some of our church’s prayer books in Malayalam in 1859. St. Gregorios Chathuruthil, popularly known as Parumala Thirumeni, had his theological and Syriac studies under Mor Koorilos Yuyakkim. Later it was Mor Koorilos who elevated Chathuruthil Geevarghese (St. Gregorios of Parumala) to the order of Kassisso and Corepiscopus.
Having good knowledge in medicine, many people used to approach the Metropolitan for treatment. Old people used to say many stories about lots of instances where people were cured of many deadly diseases. There was a general belief that abundant Godly gift is bestowed on him due to his prayerful life. As the time passed this belief got strengthened and after his death his tomb became a place of pilgrimage. There are many instances where people who seeked the intercession of Bava has been cured from major diseases. It is this faith that is bringing many to the tomb of Mor Koorilose Yuyakkim Bava.

BOYA (Balkan Orthodox Youth Association) organized a conference in Varna, Bulgaria from the 10th to 14th of September, 2008, for the 15th anniversary of their association. The theme of the conference was “To Become New Creatures in Christ.” With the blessing of His Beatitude, Archbishop Anastasios, a group of five people from the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania leaded by Mr. Jorgo Papadhopuli also participated in this activity. Other participants included representatives from the Orthodox Churches of Rumania, Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia.
In addressing the theme, “To Become New Creatures in Christ,” His Eminence, Preslav Kiril, Metropolitan of Varna and Veliki, stated that, “…all of us should fight the good fight of our faith.” The battlefield of this war in which we become new creatures in Christ is the heart. During the Divine Liturgy and in all the mysteries of our Church, we are all growing in Christ. It is all our responsibility to grow and educate a generation that marches to the Kingdom of Heaven.
Each day of this conference new publications from all the participating Orthodox Churches were presented. Publications were introduced which assist with the education of children and with the education of the whole community in knowing and growing in Christ. His Eminence Ioakim, Metropolitan of Sliven, Bulgaria, spoke on the importance of the work of catechism. He emphasized that everyone who has cleansed their minds and hearts do not preach by themselves, but speak by the grace of Holy Spirit. Each of us should not just seek our own salvation, but also seek the salvation of our brother.
On Saturday, the 13th of September a presentation was given of the book, “Globalization and Orthodoxy” by Archbishop Anastasios, which has been translated into Bulgarian. Mr. Jorgo Papadhopuli offered a general summary of the book and spoke about its importance for the whole Orthodox world. He emphasized that for all its readers, this book opens a wondrous new vision of life in a society of love; and what it means to be a society of organic persons, related by love and not just individuals co-existing.
In this book, Archbishop Anastasios states that ecumenism is in the blood of all Orthodox people, which is continually cleansed with the blood of Christ, the Savior of the World. Instead of a globalization that seeks to transform populations and people to be worthy of the economic goals of an anonymous oligarchy, the Orthodox vision proposes and invites us to work for a society of love. After this, all the participants watched with great interest a presentation on the resurrection of the Orthodox Church of Albania. The history of the resurrection and renewal of our Church during the last 17 years inspired all the participants with a special interest and admiration for this great miracle. We are all blessed in a very special way because we are testimonies of this miracle. Another part of this program activity was the pilgrimage to monasteries, churches and to historical monuments in Varna.
The conference closed with the celebration of the feast of the Elevation of the Cross in the Holy Liturgy which was held in the Cathedral of Varna, our host city. At the end of the Liturgy, His Eminence, Preslav Kiril, Metropolitan of Varna and Veliki, greeted and thanked all the participants, expressing his wish that the Sign of the Cross would be the symbol of unity and strength on our common journey to the Kingdom of Heaven.
All of us left the city of Varna with the prayer and hope of sharing with the believers of our Churches the peace and beautiful fruits of this conference.

The meeting of the Primates of Orthodox Churches was held within the framework of the Holy Apostle Paul's year and focused upon discussion of the internal problems of the Orthodox Church as well as the problems of the modern world. The main subject of the meeting was the issue of unity of the Orthodox Church. His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew I focused on the problem at the Primate's assembly.
The culmination point of the meeting and the testimony of unity of the Orthodox world became the common Liturgy celebrated on October 12, at the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Georges in the Phanar. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew presided over this Liturgy. Concelebrating to His All-Holiness were the Primates of the Orthodox Churches, heads of the Churches' delegations, and the Primate of the UOC His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr. The Message of the Primates of the Local Orthodox Churches was an outcome of the brotherly theological and liturgical communion.
The Message of the Primates of the Orthodox Churches to Orthodox people and all humanity
The heads of the Orthodox Churches of the world specified the problems and challenges confronting today the humanity and the Orthodox Church, among them are:
- internal contradictions of the Orthodox Church on ideological and ethnophyletic grounds;
- problems of estrangement, splits and conflicts between people and nations;
- ecological problems;
- secularisation problem;
- the gap between the poor and the rich and the consumerist society;
- the limits of the scientific cognition and the problems of bioethics;
- family and youth problems.
Having outlined the main problems of the church and social life, the Primates reaffirmed "from the See of the First-Throne among the Churches":
а) their obligation to safeguard the unity of the Orthodox Church;
б) their desire for the swift healing of every canonical anomaly;
в) our desire to continue the theological dialogues with other Christians, as well as the interreligious dialogue;
г) their support for the initiatives for the protection of the natural environment;
д) their decision to proceed with the necessary actions, in order to form an Inter-Orthodox Committee to study issues of bioethics.
The Primates of the Orthodox Churches also welcomed the proposition of the Ecumenical Church to convene Panorthodox Consultations in 2009 on the subject of the Orthodox diasporas and for the continuation of preparations for the Holy and Great Council.
The Address of His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr to the Primates of the Orthodox Churches and the Perspectives of Reunification of the Ukrainian Orthodoxy
At the meeting of the Primates of the Orthodox Churches in the Phanar His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr on behalf of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church addressed the letter to each Primate of Local Orthodox Church with a request to facilitate collegially the solution of the problems of the Ukrainian Orthodoxy.
On its part the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has testified its readiness to take part in the all-church discussion of the church schism in Ukraine and addressed with request to all the Primates to support the efforts of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church aimed at restoration of the church unity in our country and to work out the standpoint common for all the Local Orthodox Churches on the ways of overcoming the church splits in Ukraine.

St. Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow
Dearly Beloved in the Lord:
In all things, it is good to begin with God in whose grace we live and move and have our being. We, the members of the Holy Synod, pray that this same grace will inspire us in our words to you, and will guide each of us in a life of repentance in the communion of the Holy Church.
The past three years have been a time of great temptation and difficulty for our Church, and the weight of the cross has been heavy for all of us. The Lord of Glory Himself was nailed to the Cross and we should not imagine that it is possible for us to attain His Glory without bearing our own crosses. This was the message of the feast of the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-giving Cross, which we recently celebrated. In this time of turmoil, it is fitting to reflect upon the great mystery of our Faith, the mystery of the Cross, through which “joy has come into all the world,” “corruption has been destroyed, and incorruption has flowered forth” and through which “every gift of grace has shone upon us.”
Mankind has been wounded by sin, broken by passions and subject to corruption and death. Yet, through Christ we are able to find healing for our souls, purification for our hearts and eternal life in His Heavenly Kingdom. We offer this pastoral letter as an expression of our desire to share with you the burden of bearing the cross and of our prayer that we might all be guided by God’s mercy to the joy, the incorruption and the grace which the Cross offers.
Past and Present Storms
On April 10, 1970, The Orthodox Church in America received her autocephaly from the Russian Orthodox Church. This historic event ushered in a period of great promise and hope for Orthodoxy on this continent and, over the past thirty-eight years, much good has been accomplished by God’s grace. At the same time the granting of autocephaly caused quite a stir throughout world Orthodoxy, something which Father Alexander Schmemann referred to as “a meaningful storm” in an article with that title, in which he offered some reflections on the nature and the causes of the controversy.
Today, we find ourselves passing through another storm which has overshadowed the life of our Church for some time and appears to offer less promise of blessing than the one that we faced at the dawn of our autocephaly. Nonetheless, it is often in the midst of temptations and struggles that we best respond to God’s grace and make spiritual progress. The Lord Himself passed through a cataclysm to which no earthly storm can compare in His Passion in the flesh, Death on the Cross and Descent into Hell. In voluntarily undergoing this unjust suffering and death, Christ paradoxically shattered the gates of death, brought light to those in darkness and rose on the third day, granting all of us who are justly condemned to death entrance into the eternal life of Paradise.
As we face the challenge of emerging from the turmoil we have experienced in our Church these past years, it is our conviction that we too can participate in the resurrection of Christ through our imitation of His voluntary bearing of His sufferings. Though our sufferings cannot compare to His, still, all that we have endured can become a source of growth, repentance and renewal if we voluntarily take them upon ourselves, beseeching God’s help in moving forward. As the particular problems and failings of the past are addressed and resolved, it is our conviction that meaning can be found in the present storm and that, by the grace of Almighty God, we can attain to a calm harbor.
A Great Temptation
The Church has undergone a great temptation, beginning with the revelation of financial misconduct and negligence and resulting in a loss of trust, feelings of betrayal, division among brethren and an increase of passions in the hearts of many. We have endured the shame of being humbled in the eyes of the world and seeing the life and the mission of our Church become entangled in earthly cares.
We, as members of the Holy Synod, accept our own responsibility for what has taken place. We acknowledge that we have been both inattentive and negligent. We recognize that we have failed on many levels and we are determined that we will learn from our mistakes. We also acknowledge the reality and the depth of the pain, hurt and confusion that have been endured by many of the clergy and the faithful of our Church.
Though the resolution to our current crisis has been proceeding at too slow a pace, still, we are grateful that the life of the Church has not become paralyzed, and that the work of the Gospel has continued in parishes, deaneries and dioceses. We are also grateful for the patience, advice and support that we have received from our clergy and faithful in all of this.
We feel strongly that now is the time to work to recover the zeal and the courage that once inspired us. The Holy Fathers of the Church remind us that temptation and humiliation can lead either to despair and death, on the one hand, or to humility and life on the other hand. The way of the world leads to despair, the way of Christ leads to humility. We must follow the way of Christ if we desire to be healed and reconciled.
The Path Forward
At the most recent joint meeting of the Holy Synod and Metropolitan Council, the Report of the Special Investigative Committee (SIC) was received, approved and distributed to the Church. All of the recommendations were either acted upon at that meeting, or procedures were set in place to follow through on those recommendations in the immediate future. The Holy Synod of Bishops urged Metropolitan HERMAN to retire, which he did. Archbishop DMITRI was elected Locum Tenens, and Archbishop SERAPHIM was appointed Administrator to assist him. The Holy Synod and Metropolitan Council also issued a joint statement of apology to the Church in general and to Mr. John Kozey (former chief auditor) in particular.
The release of the findings of the SIC and the subsequent actions taken were a positive pivotal point in the turmoil of the past three years, but were by no means the conclusion to that turmoil. In the same way, the upcoming All-American Council in Pittsburgh will be a pivotal event on the path to healing and reconciliation, but this single event will not automatically provide that healing and reconciliation. We must all begin today to prepare ourselves, not only for the All-American Council, but for the betterment of the life of our Orthodox Church in America.
We stand at a crucial time in the life of our Church, but it is a time at which we continually stand as Christians: one of repentance. St. Gregory Palamas reminds us that “repentance is the beginning, middle and end of the Christian way of life, so it is sought and required before Holy Baptism, in Holy Baptism, and after Holy Baptism.” As we seek repentance and reconciliation, we must recognize that these are not to be sought only once, but should be the continual focus of our earthly life, and the process of our Christian spiritual growth. It will be important for us to remind ourselves of this and to help each other as we move forward.
Forgiveness and Reconciliation
The upcoming All-American Council will neither be the continuation of the status quo nor the finalization of our mutual forgiveness and reconciliation. The paths of mutual forgiveness and reconciliation are the ones that we all must follow and we must walk upon them beginning this day. Shortly, the Holy Synod will meet for its Fall Session. It is our intention, on one particular day, to celebrate Vespers followed by a ceremony of mutual forgiveness and, on the following day, to concelebrate the Divine Liturgy.
In addition, each local Bishop will recommend that a similar service be held either in all parishes or in deaneries, depending on the local circumstances, sometime before the All-American Council. Although each parish will be represented at the All-American Council, the service of mutual forgiveness is one that is most effective and meaningful in the local community. There is need, of course, for some expression of this at the All-American Council as well, which has been considered by the Preconciliar Commission and is reflected in the proposed agenda for the Council.
Fighting the Passions
Our task now is to work towards the healing of the wounds inflicted upon our ecclesial family through the overcoming of the passions in our heart. In a family, conflict can either bring about the destruction of unity and love, or it can conversely bring about healing and reconciliation. The most direct path to the latter is the nurturing of the virtues within our hearts and in our actions.
The experience of the saints is that all the passions have their root in the heart, no matter what their external cause. The following words of Saint John Cassian concerning anger could be applied to all the passions: “No matter what provokes it, anger blinds the soul’s eyes, preventing it from seeing the Sun of righteousness. Leaves, whether of gold or lead, placed over the eyes, obstruct our sight equally, for the value of the gold does not affect the blindness it produces. Similarly, anger, whether reasonable or unreasonable, obstructs our spiritual vision.”
Let us strive for love so that we might truly fulfill the law of Christ by bearing one another’s burdens. The justice of the world can never comprehend the depths of Christian love, which assumes responsibility even for the sins and mistakes of others.
Prayer and Reflection
St. Theophan the Recluse reminds us that “when prayer is right, everything is right”, and therefore we encourage all to devote our energies to this indispensable spiritual work. Let us reflect upon the events of the past three years in the context of prayer, as a spiritual effort, rather than an intellectual one.
Special petitions in preparation for the All-American Council have already been distributed to the parishes. In addition to these prayers at the Divine Liturgy, let us all to offer fervent prayers in our homes, beseeching the Lord on bended knees for the good estate of the Church and for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Godly Communication
Much has been spoken and written about the crisis of the past three years. Many have spoken publicly, in newsletters, in blogs, on websites and on lists. Many have shared comments and concerns in smaller and more private venues. Still others have said nothing but have had their hearts darkened and confused by thoughts. There is no medium of communication that can be declared inherently good or evil. It is only the use that we make of these means of communication that renders them so.
Let us all, clergy and faithful, be mindful of the commandments of Christ in our communications with one another. Whether we are speaking face to face, on the telephone or through a multitude of other electronic devices, we must always remember to see the other as a person, as one bearing the image of Christ, as an icon of Christ.
The Immediate Future
The upcoming All-American Council will provide us with an opportunity to reflect more fully on the causes which led to our present crisis and on the means by which we might continue to correct that which needs correcting. In this process, it is important that we be mindful of the proper ecclesiology which should always guide us. The Holy Scriptures used for the theme of this year’s Council remind us that we are “members of one another in Christ” (Eph 4:25). There can be no clergy and faithful without the bishop, and there can be no bishop without the clergy and faithful.
At the same time, the storm through which we are passing makes it clear that much thought, prayer and discernment will be needed to clarify the relationship among the various members of the Church. This work will require a serious evaluation and clarification of the Statute of The Orthodox Church in America, which in turn will require both a faithful adherence to the patristic and canonical Tradition of the Church and an honest appraisal of the conditions and needs of modern life on this continent.
In conclusion
As we move forward in this difficult time, let us continue to do the work of the Lord. Let us recall the rich history and tradition of The Autocephalous Orthodox Church in America and continue to offer of our time and our talents for the spiritual growth of our families, our parishes, and our dioceses. The spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the responsibility of all and this work must be continued with repentance in our own hearts and with love for God, which will bear fruit in our love for the neighbor. We exhort you to preach Christ, to support your parish priest and his family, to bring back the lost sheep, to offer hospitality to those seeking the True Faith, to increase inter-parish cooperation and to come together as often as possible within your local communities, and to support local, diocesan and OCA programs and departments as well as the seminaries as they work towards furthering missionary and educational growth.
Finally, we ask for your prayers for the members of the Holy Synod so that all things may be done in good order and for the glory of God and His Holy Church.

“THE SEMINARY IS A TREASURE BOX RICH IN SPIRITUAL AND INTELLECTUAL VALUES”
0 Comments Published by georgy on Wednesday, October 15 at 11:53 PM.

The 79th academic year of the Catholicosate of Cilicia’s Seminary was inaugurated this Sunday during an official ceremony in the Veharan following the Holy Mass on the occasion of the Feast of the Holy Translators (Tarkmantchats).
His Holiness Aram I presided over the Mass in the Cathedral. Bishop Shahe Panossian, the Seminary Dean, officiated the Mass. In his sermon, Bishop Panossian spoke about the Seminary’s mission in the service of the church and the people.
Following the mass, the procession of the Cilician Brotherhood and Seminary students was led by His Holiness Aram I to the Veharan, where the opening ceremony was held. The Seminary’s Alma Mater and hymns on the Feast of Translation were sung. Sections from the Holy Gospel and Nareg were read.
Speaking on behalf of the Seminary’s management, Bishop Shahe highlighted the sacred work carried out by the Seminary in passing on a noble mission to the new generation. “The responsibility for this task is placed on our shoulders for the sake of our church’s and the Catholicosate of Cilicia’s further growth,” he said. Finally, the Bishop expressed his gratitude to the Pontiff who closely follows life in the Seminary and the activities of its management.
With his pontifical blessings His Holiness Aram I announced the new academic year opened and stressed the need to preserve our church’s and nation’s history and traditions. Looking at the legacy of our translating forefathers, His Holiness spoke about the beginning of the new academic year as an occasion that spreads hope in Armenian communities worldwide. The Pontiff also spoke about certain phenomena that drive us away from our roots. He called upon those present and particularly the Seminary students to study the history of our church and the tradition of our forefathers very well so that they can pass it on in its true form to the people.
His Holiness also spoke about the Seminary’s mission. The Pontiff depicted the Seminary as an intellectual-spiritual establishment, where the Armenian youth is formed and prepared to serve a mission. Portraying the Seminary as a treasure box of spiritual and intellectual values, His Holiness called upon new and old students to embrace those values, become enriched with them and to serve our nation, church and Motherland with utmost dedication.
The Seminary students, their parents and the believers attending the ceremony received the Pontiff’s blessings through Atchahampouyr while the Catholicosate’s Seminary sung “Cilicia” and “I Veh Partsants”. Following the staff meeting on Monday, October 13, the classes will begin in the Seminary in Bikfaya on October 14.
The First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad Visits Holy Cross Hermitage

A procession of the cross was first made from the monastery church to the open-air chapel of the Icon of the Mother of God of the “Sign” with the Life-bearing Cross, the myrrh-streaming Icon of St Anne and relics of Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon. After the procession, a moleben was performed at the chapel before the Port Arthur Icon of the Mother of God.
All-night vigil was performed by 17 priests and three deacons. Confessions were heard by four priests. Because of the large number of pilgrims, confessions were still being heard even after the dismissal. There were no fewer than 250 pilgrims in attendance.
The festal Divine Liturgy was held the next day under the open sky. During the reading of the hours, Reader Jonathan Yerkes of St Nicholas Parish in Millville, NJ, was ordained subdeacon; and the local parishioner Jeremiah Davis was ordained a reader. During the minor entrance, the rector of the podvorie, Hieromonk Seraphim was awarded the gold pectoral cross and elevated to the rank of hegumen; Hieromonk Alexander was awarded the nabedrennik. At the prescribed moment of the Liturgy, Subdeacon Jonathan was then ordained to the deaconate. Because of the great number of pilgrims, three chalices were used to administer the Holy Gifts. His Eminence delivered a sermon on the Honorable Life-giving Cross. The pilgrims rejoiced at the opportunity to pray before the Port Arthur Icon, the Icon of St Anne and of St Panteleimon. The Port Arthur Icon is to remain at the monastery for several additional weeks.
After Divine Liturgy, a trapeza was held at the local National Park, and awards were given to those who labored and donated in benefit of the monastery. Deacon Gabriel Weller, Subdeacon Julian Saad, Louis and Alexandra Gephart, Dr David Leif and Ryan Paul Winter received icons of Great Martyr Panteleimon. With the blessing of the First Hierarch, Priest John Moses appealed to the pilgrims to contribute towards the construction of a residence for Archimandrite George (Schaeffer), who in December will be consecrated bishop. With the blessing of Metropolitan Hilarion, the future Bishop George’s home will be Holy Cross Hermitage.
MESSAGE OF THE PRIMATES OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCHES At CONSTANTINOPLE
0 Comments Published by georgy on at 11:36 PM.1. Through the Grace of God, the Primates and the Representatives of the local Orthodox Churches have gathered from 10-12 October, 2008, in the Phanar, at the invitation and under the presidency of the First among us, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, on the occasion of the proclamation of this year as the year of Saint Paul, Apostle to the Nations. We have deliberated in fraternal love on the issues that concern the Orthodox Church, and participating in the festivities of this occasion, we celebrated together the Holy Eucharist in the Most Sacred Patriarchal Church of the Ecumenical Throne, today, 12 October 2008, Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the 7th Ecumenical Council of Nicaea. During these days, we have been strengthened by the truth of the gifts of divine providence received by the Apostle to the Nations, which rendered him a superb “chosen vessel” (Acts 9:15) of God and a shining model of apostolic ministry for the body of the Church.
The entire Orthodox Church is honoring this Apostle during the current year of the Lord, promoting him as an example to its faithful for a contemporary witness of our faith to “those near and those afar” (Eph. 2:17).
2. The Orthodox Church, having the understanding of the authentic interpretation of the teaching of the Apostle to the Nations, in both peaceful and difficult times of its two-thousand year historical course, can and must promote to the contemporary world the teaching not only regarding the restoration in Christ of the unity of the entire human race, but also regarding the universality of His work of redemption, through which all the divisions of the world are overcome and the common nature of all human beings is affirmed.
Nevertheless, the faithful promotion of this message of redemption also presupposes overcoming the internal conflicts of the Orthodox Church through the surrendering of nationalistic, ethnic and ideological extremes of the past. For only in this way will the word of Orthodoxy have a necessary impact on the contemporary world.
3. Inspired by the teaching and the work of the Apostle Paul, we underscore first and foremost, the importance of the duty of Mission for the life of the Church, and in particular for the ministry of us all, in accordance with the final commandment of the Lord: “you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem, but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth” (Acts 1:8). The evangelization of God’s people, but also of those who do not believe in Christ, constitutes the supreme duty of the Church. This duty must not be fulfilled in an aggressive manner, or by various forms of proselytism, but with love, humility and respect for the identity of each individual and the cultural particularity of each people. All Orthodox Churches must contribute to this missionary effort, respecting the canonical order.
4. The Church of Christ today fulfills it ministry in a rapidly developing world, which has now become interconnected through means of communication and the development of means of transportation and technology. At the same time however, the extent of alienation, divisions and conflicts is also increasing. Christians emphasize that the source of this condition is the alienation of man from God. No change in social structures or of rules of behavior suffices to heal this condition. The Church consistently points out that sin can only be conquered through the cooperation of God and humankind.
5. Under such circumstances, the contemporary witness of Orthodoxy for the ever-increasing problems of humanity and of the world becomes imperative, not only in order to point out their causes, but also in order to directly confront the tragic consequences that follow. The various nationalistic, ethnic, ideological and religious contrasts continuously nurture dangerous confusion, not only in regard to the unquestionable ontological unity of the human race, but also in regard to man’s relationship to sacred creation. The sacredness of the human person is constrained to partial claims for the “individual”, whereas his relationship toward the rest of sacred creation is subjected to his arbitrary use or abuse of it.
These divisions of the world introduce an unjust inequality in the participation of individuals, or even peoples in the goods of Creation; they deprive billions of people of basic goods and lead to the misery for the human person; they cause mass population migration, kindle nationalistic, religious and social discrimination and conflict, threatening traditional internal societal coherence. These consequences are still more abhorrent because they are inextricably linked with the destruction of the natural environment and the entire ecosystem.
6. Orthodox Christians share responsibility for the contemporary crisis of this planet with other people, whether they are people of faith or not, because they have tolerated and indiscriminately compromised on extreme human choices, without credibly challenging these choices with the word of faith. Therefore, they also have a major obligation to contribute to overcoming the divisions of the world.
The Christian teaching about the ontological unity between the human race and sacred creation, as expressed by the entire mystery of the redemptive work in Christ, constitutes the foundation for interpretation of man’s relationship with God and the world.
7. Efforts to distance religion from societal life constitute the common tendency of many modern states. The principle of a secular state can be preserved; however, it is unacceptable to interpret this principle as a radical marginalization of religion from all spheres of public life.
8. The gap between rich and poor is growing dramatically due to the financial crisis, usually the result of manic profiteering by economic factors and corrupt financial activity, which, by lacking an anthropological dimension and sensitivity, does not ultimately serve the real needs of mankind. A viable economy is that which combines efficacy with justice and social solidarity.
9. With regard to the issue of the relationship of Christian faith to the natural sciences, the Orthodox Church has avoided pursuing ownership of developing scientific research and assuming a position on every scientific question. From the Orthodox viewpoint, freedom of research constitutes a God-given gift to humanity. While affirming this however, at the same time Orthodoxy underscores the dangers concealed in certain scientific achievements, the limits of scientific knowledge, and the existence of another “knowledge” that does not immediately fall with the scope of science. This other “knowledge” proves in many ways to be necessary for establishing the proper boundaries of freedom, and utilizing the fruits of science by the restraint of egocentrism and respect for the value of the human person.
10. The Orthodox Church believes that technological and economic progress should not lead to the destruction of the environment and the exhaustion of natural resources. Greed to satisfy material desires leads to the impoverishment of the human soul and the environment. We must not forget that the natural riches of the earth are not only man’s property, but primarily God’s creation: “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and all who dwell therein” (Ps.23:1). We ought to remember that not only today’s generation, but also future generations are entitled to have a right to the resources of nature, which the Creator has granted us.
11. In firmly supporting every peaceful effort for just solutions to conflicts that arise, we salute the position of the Churches of Russia and Georgia and their fraternal cooperation during the period of recent military conflict. In this way, the two Churches fulfilled the obligation to the ministry of reconciliation. We hope that their mutual ecclesiastical efforts will contribute to overcoming the tragic consequences of military operations and the swift reconcilement of the peoples.
12. In the ever-growing confusion of our times, the institution of family and marriage faces a crisis. In a spirit of understanding the new complex social condition, the Church is obliged to find ways to spiritually support and generally encourage the young and large families.
We turn our thoughts especially to the young people, in order to call them to actively participate both in the sacramental and sanctifying life, as well as in the missionary and social work of the Church, transferring their problems and their expectations to the Church, since they constitute not only its future, but also its present.
13. As Primates and the Representatives of the Most Holy Orthodox Churches, fully aware of the gravity of the aforementioned problems, and laboring to confront them directly as “servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries” (1 Cor. 4:1), we proclaim from this See of the First-throne among the Churches and we re-affirm:
i) our unswerving position and obligation to safeguard the unity of the Orthodox Church in “the faith once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3), the faith of our Fathers, in the common Divine Eucharist and in the faithful observance of the canonical system of Church governance by settling any problems that arise from time to time in relations among us with a spirit of love and peace.
ii) our desire for the swift healing of every canonical anomaly that has arisen from historical circumstances and pastoral requirements, such as in the so-called Orthodox Diaspora, with a view to overcoming every possible influence that is foreign to Orthodox ecclesiology. In this respect we welcome the proposal by the Ecumenical Patriarchate to convene Panorthodox Consultations within the coming year 2009 on this subject, as well as for the continuation of preparations for the Holy and Great Council. In accordance with the standing order and practice of the Panorthodox Consultations in Rhodes, it will invite all Autocephalous Churches.
iii) our desire to continue, despite any difficulties, the theological dialogues with other Christians, as well as the interreligious dialogues, especially with Judaism and Islam, given that dialogue constitutes the only way of solving differences among people, especially in a time like today, when every kind of division, including those in the name of religion, threaten people’s peace and unity.
iv) our support for the initiatives by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, as well as by other Orthodox Churches, for the protection of the natural environment. Today’s ecological crisis, which is due to both spiritual and ethical reasons, renders imperative the obligation of the Church to contribute through the spiritual means at her disposal, to the protection of God’s creation from the consequences of human greed. In this regard, we reaffirm the designation of the 1st of September, the first day of the Ecclesiastical Year, as the day of special prayers for the protection of God’ creation, and we support the introduction of the subject of the natural environment in the catechetical, homiletic, and general pastoral activity of our Churches, as this is already the case in some.
v) the decision to proceed with the necessary actions, in order to form an Inter-Orthodox Committee to study issues of bioethics, on which the world also awaits the position of Orthodoxy.
Addressing these things to the Orthodox people throughout the world and to the entire oikoumene, we pray “again and again” that peace, justice, and God’s love may finally prevail in people’s lives.
“Glory be to him whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, glory be to him in the Church and in Christ Jesus” (Eph. 3:20-21). Amen.

Epistle of the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia at the Commencement of the "Days of Russian Spiritual Culture"
0 Comments Published by georgy on at 11:31 PM.Last year, the Lord, in His goodness, granted that we were able to experience the joy of the restoration of the fullness of fraternal fellowship within the one Russian Orthodox Church in the heart of our homeland, Moscow, at a time when the Holy Church was hymning Christ the Savior, Who ascended to the throne of God and reconciled heaven and earth.
We later noted this joy in the several of the dioceses of the Russian Church Abroad to which the "Reigning" Icon of the Mother of God was brought, in company with an official delegation of the Moscow Patriarchate and the choir of Moscow's Sretensky Stavropighial Monastery. Addressing the clergy and flock of the Russian Church Abroad, Metropolitan Laurus, who has since reposed in blessedness, called these solemnities "a happy event for the increase of our efforts, so bestowed that the gifts of grace of the risen and ascended Lord might be worthily received." This year, within the context of the celebration of the "Days of Russian Spiritual Culture," this same great holy object of the Russian Orthodox Church will be brought to our parishes in Latin America, likewise accompanied by a delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church, one of whose members will be the newly-consecrated Bishop John of Caracas, as well as the singers of the aforementioned monastery choir.
I hope and believe that this journey will have a beneficial influence upon the further development and deepening of our unity and shared service to God and the people. For the Lord desired this and prayed to His heavenly Father especially for this, that all of His followers might be "one flock under rule of Him", the "one Shepherd" (John 10:16). For this reason, I call upon everyone to pray before the "Reigning" Icon of the Mother of God, to take part in the concelebrated divine services, to receive communion of the holy Mysteries of Christ, to avail themselves of the opportunity of sharing in fellowship with our compatriots, to learn more about the situation of the Church in Russia, and to listen to the compunctionate hymnody of the choir. Then we will be able worthily to receive the gracious gifts of the risen and ascended Lord, His mercies and blessings, during these festal days. Amen.
With love in the Lord and a request for your prayers,
+Hilarion,
Metropolitan of Eastern America and New York,

Later that day the All-Night Vigil was celebrated by the Patriarch and concelebrated by Archbishop Arseny of Istra, Bishop Theognost of Sergiev Posad, Bishop Ambrose of Gatchina, Bishop Aristarch of Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk and Bishop Sergius of Ussuryisk in the same cathedral.
After the end of the service the Patriarch reminded the attending believers that the Wonderworker of Radonezh always takes care of those who resort to his prayerful and beneficial aid with faith and confidence. “We are all children of St. Sergius,” the Patriarch stressed.
On October 8, day of the feast, the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Assumption Cathedral of the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra.

Christian Interconfessional Consultative Committee of the CIS and Baltic countries resumes its work
0 Comments Published by georgy on at 11:16 PM.

The Christian Interconfessional Consultative Committee is co-chaired by the chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, the head of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow archbishop Paolo Pezzi, and the chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Russian Union of the Evangelical Christians Baptists Rev. Vitaly Vlasenko.
While greeting the participants, Metropolitan Kirill noted that people calling themselves the followers of Christ and bound by common history are living in different stated in which different national identity is being shaped.' Moreover, the Orthodox, Catholic and Protestants have their brethren of the same faith in all corners of the world, and these people live in the states with different interests. 'That is why it is necessary to always match the national and the universal in practical pastoral activity and theology,' Metropolitan Kirill underscored.
He is convinced that nothing separates people more than the shed blood, and the August events in the Caucasus bear clear testimony to it. The two Orthodox peoples, namely the Georgians and the Ossetians, have lived in peace for a long time, though their vision of history and the future was different. Now they are separated by blood and sufferings. Yet, the believers still have the Gospel categorical imperative, which is the Saviour's call to unity and peace.
'It is necessary to remember that we all are citizens of the heavenly Fatherland for, according to St. Paul, 'here we have no lasting city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.' (Heb 13:14). Orthodoxy has always been aware of the fact that government, states and even nations come and go, while the Church remains. Eternal life is most important to Christians who should be able to regard their earthly interests as secondary, as the main thing to them is their aspiration for the Heavenly Kingdom with its new heaven and new earth (cf. Rev 21:1) where no national and state borders exists,' Metropolitan Kirill continued.
He is convinced that Christians should not be indifferent to the sufferings, cares and needs of their neighbours. 'Patriotism is inherent in Christians as love to their neighbour, their families and their church community. Though love cannot be limited by family, and Christians love their native country and their own people. Therefore, Christians should not be afraid of the word 'patriotism.' It fits well into Christian vocabulary.'
He thinks that Christians should maintain relations even despite conflicts between states accompanied not only by military confrontation but also by information wars. For instance, after the Russian Orthodox Church had petitioned before military authorities, His Holiness and Beatitude Patriarch-Catholicos of All Georgia Iliya II visited the city of Gori and met with the locals and Russian soldiers there.
The Moscow Patriarchate initiated a visit of the delegations of the World Council of Churches to Georgia, South Ossetia and Russia and international Christian humanitarian aid to both sided suffered during the conflict. In conclusion of his address Metropolitan Kirill said that the Lord had called Christians to reconcile people and should strive for their unity and for life in peace.
The participants discussed future activities of the Christian Interconfessional Consultative Committee of the CIS and |Baltic countries and made a statement on the result of the meeting. The Committee was set up on the4 initiative of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1993 to develop cooperation among Christians in the post-Soviet space – In Russian and the CIS and Baltic countries. The Committee held three major interconfessional conferences in 1994, 1996 and 1999 and the Christian Interconfessional Youth Conference on 'Christianity in the Third Millennium' in 2001.
The Committee suspended its work in 2002 because of the difficulties in interconfessional relations. Yet in 2007, representatives of Christians Churches and communities of the CIS and Baltic countries meeting on the eve of the 3rd European Interchristian Assembly put forward an initiative to resume its work.

Metropolitan Vladimir asks the primates of local Churches to help overcome the Orthodox schism in Ukraine

In this case the self-proclaimed Patriarchate of Kiev was referred to in the address as a "pseudo-church structure". Participants of the All-Orthodox meeting in Istanbul make an appeal to overcome the world economic crisis and the consequences of war in the Caucuses
0 Comments Published by georgy on at 11:07 PM. Moscow, October 13, Interfax - Participants of All-Orthodox meeting held October 10-11 in Istanbul, expressed their concern with the world economic crisis, attempts to force religion out of social life and many other problems and made an appeal to overcome them. "The general tendency in many modern states is the attempts to force religion out of social life. The secular principle of a state may remain, but it would be unacceptable to treat this principle as a drastic ban of religion from all citizens' spheres of life," the final message of the participants accepted on Sunday reads.
The participants noted that in the world "there is a growing rate of alienation, separation and conflicts," and the source of this condition is "the estrangement of people from God," and "no transformations of social structures and rules of conduct are able to heal this situation."
"The gap between the rich and the poor is growing due to the economic crisis which is the result of the perverted economic activity which lacks human dimensions, and the profit pursuit by financiers which often becomes maniac," the document reads. The participants stressed that only such economy could be viable "which combines efficiency with justice and social solidarity."
"We firmly support all peaceful efforts aimed at fair settlement of arising conflicts. We welcome the position of Russian and
The participants in the meeting noted, “Various nationalistic, ethnic, ideological and religious contrasts continuously nurture dangerous confusion.” According to them, “The sacredness of the human person is constrained to partial claims for the “individual”, whereas his relationship toward the rest of sacred creation is subjected to his arbitrary use or abuse of it.” “These divisions of the world introduce an unjust inequality in the participation of individuals, or even peoples in the goods of Creation; they deprive billions of people of basic goods and lead to the misery for the human person; they cause mass population migration, kindle nationalistic, religious and social discrimination and conflict, threatening traditional internal societal coherence,” the message reads.
Consequences of these divisions are “still more abhorrent because they are inextricably linked with the destruction of the natural environment and the entire ecosystem,” the Orthodox participants believe.
They expressed concerns that “in the ever-growing confusion of our times, the institution of family and marriage faces a crisis” and stressed, “the Church is obliged to find ways to spiritually support and generally encourage the young and large families” “Orthodox Christians share responsibility for the contemporary crisis of this planet with other people, whether they are people of faith or not, because they have tolerated and indiscriminately compromised on extreme human choices, without credibly challenging these choices with the word of faith. Therefore, they also have a major obligation to contribute to overcoming the divisions of the world,” the message stresses.
Its authors also “desire to continue, despite any difficulties, the theological dialogues with other Christians, as well as the interreligious dialogues, especially with Judaism and Islam, given that dialogue constitutes the only way of solving differences among people, especially in a time like today, when every kind of division, including those in the name of religion, threaten people’s peace and unity.” Besides, the participants supported “the introduction of the subject of the natural environment in the catechetical, homiletic, and general pastoral activity” of the Churches, as this was already the case in some and confirmed their decision to set up inter-Orthodox committee to study issues of bioethics.

A representative of Russian Church participated in a Biblical marathon together with Benedict XVI
0 Comments Published by georgy on at 10:53 PM.This weeklong project will feature 1248 specially selected readers who will recite Bible in the Italian language non-stop, from the first to the last page. The marathon was lead by Pope Benedict XVI reciting the first chapter of the Book of Genesis. He was immediately followed by Bishop of Vienna and Austria Hilarion, a representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in European international organizations, who recited the second chapter of the Book of Genesis, the Bishop's press service reported to Interfax-Religion Monday.
Renowned Italian actors, intellectuals, high-ranking representative of the Roman Catholic Church and other Christian organizations will participate in the reading of further chapters.
The first hour of the project was aired live by RAI-Uno and Eurovision. Live broadcast of the following days will be led by RAI-Education, several satellite channels and Radio Vaticana.
"It was for the first time that the largest state-owned TV channel had initiated live broadcast of reading the whole Bible. At the time when secular television pays so little attention to religious issues, this project seems critically important," Bishop Hilarion said to Interfax-Religion.\ According to him, the project has an important missionary meaning, as due to this initiative "Bible will enter homes of many people who speak Italian."

0 Comments Published by georgy on at 10:58 PM.

The 13th-century master who painted what has been listed by UNESCO as one of the world's finest collections of medieval frescoes at the Boyana church
on the outskirts of Sofia has finally been identified."We now know the painter with certainty," the director of the National History Museum Bozhidar Dimitrov told AFP, as the church reopened Thursday to the public after undergoing restoration work for almost a century. The final stage of the renovation revealed a rare inscription under a layer of plaster on one of the church walls: "I, Vasiliy inscribed." Historians had argued earlier that Vasiliy might indeed be the mysterious "Boyana master", as he was the only painter among the kings and nobles whose names were read out on a regular basis during sermons at the church, Dimitrov said.
"The Christian Orthodox Church forbids the painter from manifesting himself, as in the eyes of the priests it is God who guides his hand. But this painter inscribed his name, knowing that the believers could not see it," said restorator Grigoriy Grigorov. Other historians and archeologists were less certain that the inscription belonged to the church's fresco master, suggesting that it could also have been the work of one his assistants. The small church on the outskirts of Sofia has featured on the UNESCO world heritage list since 1979, as "one of the most complete and perfectly preserved monuments of east European medieval art."
While respecting Byzantine religious norms, the frescoes painted in 1259 possessed rare freedom, realism, harmony in the proportions, liveliness and warmth that already foresaw the birth of the Italian Renaissance, according to a UNESCO review of the site. The master even went as far as to depict two commoners next to the saints: the church patrons, Sofia governor Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his beautiful wife Desislava.
The faces of the saints and martyrs were created by applying multiple layers of paint to give them life-like looks and expressions that were highly unusual at the time, Grigorov also noted. The painter even introduced elements of Bulgarian cuisine in the painting of the Last Supper, such as onions and turnips. The oldest part of the church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, was built at the foot of Vitosha mountain in the late 10th and early 11th century.
In the mid-13th century, Kaloyan and Desislava commissioned a second section to the initial one-apse cross-vaulted church, this time dedicated to Christian martyr Panteleimon. The church fell into disuse with the advance of the Ottoman domination in the 14th century and it was only in the mid-1800s that its third and last section was built using donations from the local community.
Candles and humidity had badly damaged the frescoes and the church was closed to the public in 1954, to be only partially re-opened in 2006. With restoration complete, the Boyana church has now been equipped with an air-conditioning system to keep the temperature at 17-18 degrees Celsius (62-64 Fahrenheit). The special lighting system emits no heat, which could damage the frescoes, and groups of visitors are only let in for fifteen minutes at a time.

Egyptians against Religious Discrimination Criticize Abu Fana Reconciliation
0 Comments Published by georgy on at 10:53 PM.The group “Egyptians against Religious Discrimination” criticized the state bodies that sponsored the “illegal” reconciliation agreement for the Abu Fana incident. A statement by the group said if this agreement was eventuated, it would urge citizens to rig official documents. Even if the victims have the right to renounce their rights, the state does not the right to fail to protect society by enforcing the law and punishing violators.
Although the group respects the popular efforts aiming to put an end to the sectarian strife, those efforts would not be necessary if the law were applied to all parties so that everybody would get their rights. The informal reconciliation sessions that were held during the Abu Fana crisis consecrate injustice, lead to more problems, violate the rights of the victims and raise questions about Abu Fana priests and Bedouins, the statement said.
Although the agreement put an end to the problem outwardly, it did not resolve the discomfort over the issue by the public, which is still divided over the reasons for and nature of the Abu Fana incidents. The statement signatories called on the executive officials to enforce the law and refer the crisis to the judiciary to punish the culprits and compensate the victims. They also called on civil society organizations and human rights centers to investigate why the law was not applied and why the parties resorted to informal solutions that contravene principles of the modern civil state.
